Low birth weight infants of any gestational age have higher morbidity and mortality. However, it is not yet known if there is a threshold weight that causes a significant increase in morbidity and mortality, and whether the threshold varies with gestational age. In the United States, there are approximately 250 000 babies born each year weighing <2500 g, the majority of whom are premature babies, but about 40 000 are full-term babies with intrauterine growth retardation. The aim of this study was to identify birth weight thresholds that caused a significant increase in adverse outcomes in preterm and term infants. A total of 126 680 women were delivered at Park-land Hospital, Dallas, from January 1, 1988 to August 31, 1996, with no malformations at gestational age ≥24 weeks
