When governments are discussing how to prevent research on reproductive cloning, Nature itself may have set many obstacles along the way. In the recently published “Science” magazine, a research team reported that studies of rhesus monkeys have found that clones have lost some key proteins in embryos. These proteins are crucial for the distribution of chromosomes in cells and the normal division of cells. The same problem may also hinder the study of human cloning. Several research groups have been trying to clone monkeys by somatic cell nuclear transfer, but none succeeded. This method is to remove the nucleus from the cell and implant it into a culled cell.
