A quote from Gray’s biography written by Dr. Johnson, a great British eighteenth-century critic, was quoted by Virginia Woolf in his essay. I was impressed with this quote. Here: “It is a pleasure for me to be able to agree with the opinions of ordinary readers; for in the judgment of the right of poetry honor, elegant and sensitive doctrines and academic doctrines work in the end Based on the common sense of ordinary readers who were not fouled by literary bias. ”Johnson appears modest and apparently more visionary than those self-proclaimed critics.
