While mobile phone manufacturers (OEMs) embrace Linux as a platform for the next generation of smartphones, developing and deploying such devices is still facing technical challenges, especially as OEMs must ensure that phones have power management, quick booting, and integration Wireless interface, advanced multimedia features, attractive small-size GUIs and various PIM applications - all of which are fully integrated and run in a modest phone storage space. This is also a challenge faced by embedded Linux developers. Unlike PC, telephony design is not based on a standard system. The article details various technical issues involved in the development of Linux-based mobile phones, including the availability and maturity of key Linux technologies and open-source projects that support phone development. In addition, the article also discusses the technical and economic issues raised by mobile operators.
