This study uses narrative positioning method to analyze the narrative discourse of an oncologist about the patient’s dying and death, and to explore the changes in their professional identity. The study found that the doctor’s professional identity has gone from “doctors to avoid death ” to “approaching the death of the doctor ”, “from the dying doctor ” to Doctor, “from the doctor who treats the disease to the life-giving doctor. These changes are presented through different orientations in the three thematic narratives of death, dying and occupational, and narrators also come to realize that these experiences of caring for a dying patient are enormous ”gifts."
