个旧砂锡矿床,直露地表,无覆盖物,矿床厚度一般10至20米,最厚达50米以上,宜于露天开采。由于砂矿含泥量达60%至80%,呈细砂粒粘土质,易遭水流的浸蚀,转化为流浆状态,为水力开采和水力运输提供了有利条件。因此,一九五八年以来,水采水运工艺广泛应用于个旧砂锡矿的开采生产。根据砂矿床的赋存特点和矿石性质,在生产实践中,对水采水运工艺进行了不少科学研究和改革,取得了较好的经济效益。
