The installation of shock absorbers on rotating drill rods is the result of recent technological innovations, which can greatly reduce the cost of drilling, increase drilling efficiency, and reduce equipment maintenance. This result applies to various open pit mines. The recent installation of such shock absorbers in the Bucyrus-Eriee BE 60-foot drilling rig and the Gardner-Denver GD 120 drilling rig resulted in an overall drilling test that saved US$41.06 per hour. The shock absorber is a device installed between the rotating head and the drill rod. Its function is similar to the damping spring in the car.
