For the past 15 years, Thomson-CSF has developed and refined a specialized technique for producing brazed helix TWTs that allow them to obtain previously unattainable output power levels for helical TWTs. This technology has been applied to produce a large number of traveling wave tubes whose frequency covers a range of 2-18 GHz. After reviewing the main features of this technique, the results of a thermal analysis and a series of experiments are given. For example, injecting 2 kilowatts of CW HF power into the slow-wave structure of a brazed spiral of a 14 GHz TWT produces neither distortion nor irreversible change. Finally, some factors that usually limit the average power capacity of the brazed spiral TWT are discussed, the possibility of increasing the power capacity is discussed, and a graph showing the ultimate power limit of the technique is given.
