There are as many as 50 kinds of definition of wetlands in the world. In the subject meaning, wetland is made up of water, aquatic soil, emerged plant and hygrophyte, it’s a natural synthesis process controlled by water for a long time. The definition with obvious advantages to the protection and management is the that in the “convention on wetlands” passed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, namely: the marshes, wet areas, peatland or water, including waters with depth of less than 6m in low tide, no matter it’s natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, static or flowing, freshwater, brackish water, or salt water.
With both the characteristics of the terrestrial ecosystem and aquatic ecosystem, wetland is one of the most productive ecosystems on the earth, it can provide very important ecosystem services. The wetland doesn't only provide human resources, such as water, food, minerals and fiber products, but also has the vital functions such as maintaining biodiversity, water conservation, supplementing water, flood drought control, regulating runoff, purifying water quality, beautifying the environment, regulating climate, soil and water loss control, protecting inshore coastal aquifer not affected by salinization, improving the ability to withstand natural disasters, education and scientific research as well as the cultural heritage, therefore the wetland has important influences on the regional economic development, human survival environment and regional ecological security. China joined the “convention on wetlands” in 1992, since then, China has actively performed the duty of states parties to strengthen the protection of wetland, 40% of the wetlands are in the scope of protection. In 2004, the general office of the State Council pointed out clearly that we should “save the wetland”, “The 18th National Congress” also clearly put forward that our country’s wetland should only increase but not reduce, however, seen from the present situation of China, the loss of wetland for natural and human factors is deepening, the trend of wetland ecosystem’s destruction failed to be curbed effectively, the important ecological functions of wetlands to maintain biodiversity, provide water and food, buffer flood, replenish groundwater and prevent the erosion of salinization is reducing or lost.
The integrity, stability and health of wetlands are crucial to human welfare. It’s our common responsibility to cherish and protect the already fragile wetlands. If we understand and treat the wetlands well, the wetlands will be kind to us, and help us to create a beautiful home.
