I. Cost Advantages of Japan’s Automotive Industry The US auto industry has been going through a difficult decade, but the biggest battle it has to do is just beginning. The cost advantage of the Japanese means that they can almost arbitrarily set prices. Labor costs are an important aspect of Japan’s cost advantage. At present, the hourly wage of the Japanese auto industry is about 8 US dollars less than the United States. The price difference for a subcompact car exported from Japan to the United States is estimated to be between $1,300 and $1,700.
