山西位于华北大平原的西北。北起长城,东傍太行,西、南两面濒临黄河。历史上曾称这块土地为河东。河东秦分天下为三十六郡,始设河东郡。以后尽管所辖区域屡有变迁,但其郡制一直沿袭到隋代。唐代改设为河东道,宋代改置为河东路。河东者,乃地处黄河中游之东是也。元置河东山西道,这是河东向山西过渡的开始。明设山西行中书省,后改为山西布政使
