秣食豆为豆科大豆属一年生草本植物。直根,根系发达,并有固氮根瘤。株高1米以上。茎初期直立,后期上部蔓生,无限结荚习性。秣食豆比较耐旱、耐涝,并耐微碱。对土壤选择不严格。在辽宁西北部生育期125—130天。一般在4月下旬至5月上旬播种,开花集中在7月下旬到8月初,9月下旬种子成熟。据我所近几年的试验和大面积栽培利用,初步认定,秣食豆在风沙地上种植,是一个产量高,改土肥田效果好,营养丰富,牲畜喜食的优良牧草绿肥品种。它的优点是:
