当前,研究京剧艺术的洋人学者为数不少,排演京剧剧目的外国朋友越来越多,而进行京剧剧本创作,为京剧编腔作曲的外国人却从未有过,德国的卡斯滕·贡德曼先生是京剧史上的第一位。中国戏曲学院演出的无场次京剧《夜莺》就出自于贡德曼的手笔,成功的演出使他一时成为京剧界的新闻人物。文化部副部长高占祥看过演出后十分兴奋地说:“《夜莺》的演出是十分成功的,它为把京剧艺术推向世界开辟了一条新路,这是一次有意义的尝试。”

The successful performance made him become a news figure for the Peking opera scene for a time. Gao Zhanxiang, vice minister of culture, said with great excitement after watching the performance: “The performance of” Nightingale “has been very successful. It opens up a new road to bringing the art of Peking Opera to the world. This is a meaningful attempt.”
