An innovative radar antenna capable of simultaneous foresight, rear-view or side-view, may soon be used to perform the United States Air Force reconnaissance mission. Such a radar echosounder made by Huges Aircraft can determine its wide beam position faster than conventional antennas because the antenna is a phased array antenna and the radar beam is electrically scanned rather than mechanically scanned. The ESA antenna was mounted on the U.S. Air Force TR-1 reconnaissance plane and has been successfully tested in Europe for four years. Based on the test results, the USAF plans to install the ESA antenna on the U-2R and TR-1 aircraft.
