1964年9月10日,马云出生在杭州一户普通人家。36年后,《福布斯》对马云的描写是:“深凹的面颊,扭曲的头发,淘气的露齿笑,一个5英尺高、100磅重的顽童模样”。马云在求学时代确实是个顽童,从小喜欢替朋友出头打架,成绩让老师很头痛。连马云也曾笑言自己小学考重点中学,考了三次没有考上,大学也是考了三次才最终如愿。不过,多年后能在世界各地演讲时用英文侃侃而谈的马云,却在12岁时就自觉地开始打英语基础。1979年刚改革开放那阵儿,到杭州旅游的外国人多起来,马云一有机会就在西湖边逮着人家开练。这对他日后的发展大有裨益。在杭州师范学院,马云当选为学生会主席,后来又成为杭州市学联主席。
