At the meeting of the International Maritime Organization, the Norwegian delegation pointed out on many occasions that the aging of ships was a major cause of frequent marine accidents. Recently, an article published by the Norwegian Maritime Administration concluded that it is not advisable to say that the age of the ship is unimportant in the case of a maritime accident. Since Norway established the new international ship registration system in 1987, the Norwegian Maritime Safety Administration has signed agreements with five world-famous classification societies to carry out unplanned inspections of cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and above.
