侯先至说:“我不喜欢内蒙古的气候,我喜欢海边”,但他在英国爱丁堡大学获得博士学位后,却没有留在国外。归国后,夫人和女儿都在北京,他又放弃了留在北京的机会,回到了内蒙古。13年来,他和夫人一直两地分居,对女儿更是一直心存欠疚;作为学者,他潜心研究,先后完成多项重大科研项目;他被称为平民校长,但他说:“其实我内心很倔。”很多人对他如此执著地留在内蒙大为不解,也有很多猜测,他平静地说:“我不去解释,反正我是没走。”他用自己的行动朴素地诠释着为人、为学的坦诚和执著,他也用自己的经历告诉人们:“我是爱国爱家乡的,没有这一点基础,我不会回来”!
