Power buildup is the focus of training for swimmers, especially athletes who target breaststroke and butterfly speed programs. In these projects, the propulsion is generated by the two arms at the same time. Immediately after this stroke, the recovery stage is the hand is not in the water and the body advances due to the inertia of the previous stroke. This is in stark contrast to freestyle and backstroke, with one hand exerting propulsion in the water during both freestyle and backstroke. Breaststroke and butterfly stroke stroke action also requires athletes to push the upper body to breathe the upper body, thus even more need for an explosive forward motion.
