Objective To investigate the expression of signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) and pancreatic ductal carcinoma deletion 4 (SMAD4) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its clinical significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of STAT3 and SMAD4 in 60 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (A group), 28 cases of esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia (B group) and 20 cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (C group) . Results The positive rate of STAT3 in group A was higher than that in group C (P <0.05). STAT3 expression was positively correlated with pathological grade of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (P <0.05). The positive expression rate of SMAD4 in group A and group B was lower than that in group C (P <0.05). The expression of SMAD4 was negatively correlated with lymph node metastasis and TNM staging (P <0.05). Conclusions The combined detection of STAT3 and SMAD4 expression may be helpful in judging the prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
