Objective To evaluate the impact of 4 classes of HIV / AIDS related education for primary school students on HIV / AIDS-related knowledge and attitude toward life skills in the fifth grade of six elementary schools in A County and B City of Hainan Province. Methods The non-randomized parallel control design was used to compare the questionnaire survey results of all the fifth grade students in 6 pilot primary schools (about 1700) and 3 control primary schools (about 700 persons) in the same area before and after class to evaluate the recent course Results: Two years after the start of the program, a cross-sectional questionnaire was conducted among the first-year junior high school students (about 7,000) in 8 middle schools in both places to compare the results of the above indicators Differences to evaluate the medium-term effect of the course. Results Compared with their baseline, the awareness rate of most AIDS knowledge items in January after classes was increased by 20-40 percentage points. Most subjects in life skills self-evaluation increased by 10-20 percentage points. Two years after the commencement of classes, some of the students in the start-class group had a lower awareness rate of AIDS knowledge, but still higher than the control group in the same period. Three surveys in two years showed that students in the start-up class were able to acquire a more stable knowledge of AIDS-prevention and life skills than the control group. Conclusions Life skills-based AIDS prevention curriculum, which combines students’ actual needs, can help fifth graders better understand HIV / AIDS related knowledge and life skills.
