In the late 1980s, shortly after the drastic changes in Eastern Europe, Professor Kornai introduced his first book on countermeasures research: “The Path to a Free Economy - The Case for the Transfer from Socialist Systems, Hungary” (WW Norton & Company Inc. New York / London 1990), published in the background of Professor Cornell’s famous empirical research monograph “Shortage Economics” and a series of studies on the socialist system published about ten years later. Once published, this book has had a huge impact in the world. The book was introduced in a special paper by the Socialist Economic Reform Department of the World Bank. The book is widely introduced by academics in many countries. Some governments also use the countermeasures proposed in this book as a reference for policy making. author
