1955年国庆节前,中国人民解放军授衔时,他戴上了金灿灿的上将军衔,是被授予上将军衔的52名将军中惟一一个没有领过兵、打过仗的将军；他的历任职务是中共中央社会部部长、中央人民政府外交部副部长、中央军委总情报部部长、中国人民解放军副总参谋长等,却可以列席党的最高层会议——中共中央政治局会议。这位有点“特殊”的将军叫李克农。
