Literal Meaning: Nobody knows what happened at night
Metaphorical Meaning: it refers to the undercover bribery
Yang Zhen was born in Huayin in the East Han Dynasty. He devoted himself to educating people. As an honest and knowledgeable person, he was greatly respected and was called “the Confucius in Guanxi area”.
At the age of 50, Yang Zhen, who received numerous invitations from the court, had to take an official position. He was appointed the magistrate of Donglai prefecture. When he passed Changyi, Shandong, Wang Mi, a scholar having passed the imperial test at the county level, was the chief official of this county. He was once recommended by Yang Zhen. He hosted a banquet for Yang Zhen to appreciate his recommendation. At night, he brought 5 kg of gold to Yang Zhen, begging him to give a chance of promotion. Yang Zhen said: “I know your personality. Why don’t you know mine?”
Wang Mi said: “Relax, nobody would know it since it is midnight.”
Yang Zhen replied: “The heaven knows it; the earth knows it; you know it and I know it. How can you say that nobody knows?”
Wang was very ashamed and thus he gave up his initiative of bribery.
Thus the phrase “Mu Ye Wu Zhi” was born, which formerly described an undercover thing at night. Later it referred to bribery.
