U.S. hospitals and nursing homes have been buzzing with controversy lately. The ultimate goal of medicine is to prolong life and the quality of life. Coupled with the soaring U.S. medical costs, the debate has become more complicated. US medical expenses have reached 300 billion U.S. dollars each year, accounting for about 10% of the country’s total output of goods and services. Due to the continuous development of medical technology, medical expenses are also rising. The debate about medical ethics has also involved the country’s policies. In the face of the economic downturn, the government and the medical profession must take medical care into consideration when making decisions on life and death.
