I. Preface Alice Monroe is a famous Canadian woman writer. During her more than 40 years of literary career, she persevered in short story techniques, won important international literary awards and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013. Monroe’s novel has a strong local Gothic style: her story focuses on the one hand, the performance of the hypocrisy of society, the inner darkness and mystery of characters, make good use of Gothic archetypes and images. On the other hand, it is also rooted in real life, with distinctive local colors and deepening Gothic effect with realism. The images in her story combine the characteristics of both styles.
