This article is the first to summarize the 10 years of costly research and industrial test results that involve existing mining companies around the world. The purpose of the study was to better understand the effect of pulp rheology on the performance of ore (or coal) in grinding circuits. The first section presents the basic concepts of rheology, including typical laboratory test results, which illustrate the effects of percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature and the use of viscosity control reagents on the grinding behavior. The second part will use these concepts to illustrate the typical industrial scale test results in open and closed circuit grinding circuits. Emphasis will be placed on the determination of the relationship between industrial production parameters for some control rheology using different methods.
