Exploration professionals have recognized that S-waves appear as noise in reflected images. Sonic technology used to be or was used now to account for computational speed or for lack of data (ie only vertical component data). Here, we introduce an elastic inversion technique and illustrate its application in reef exploration. Because of the large number of converted waves in the data, a biased VSP is an excellent illustration of the need for elastic inversion techniques. Elastic inversion techniques also require good shear-wave velocity. The result shows that it is worth further attempts. In the example presented, we begin to see some details in the reef, whereas the surface reflection data and the VSP routine show only the features at the interface between Salt B and Carbonate A_2. This interface is not a reservoir but only a reservoir.
