The German machine tool industry fell badly during the recession. In 1989, the order value of the industry was 18 billion DM, which dropped to 9.3 billion DM in 1993 when the economy was in recession, resulting in a significant layoff of 30,000 people in the industry. At present, the industry employs only 675,002 people. More seriously, Germany gave Japan its position as the world’s largest machine tool exporter in Japan in 1993. Its market share in the world has also dropped to 22.5%, which is lower than Japan’s 25.4%, which is higher than that of Japan. Three of Switzerland (9.9%) and Italy (8.9%), the United States (7.7%) Taiwan (4.6%) and the United Kingdom (3.4%).
