Mental and Etiology and Treatment Maudsley observed in 1899 that “diabetes is sometimes caused by anxiety.” Some modern writers also hold similar views. Hinkle et al. (1952) analyzed more than 50 diabetes mellitus cases and found that diabetes mellitus occurred after various kinds of losses such as loss of loved ones or wealth and other mental stimuli. Stein et al. (1971) reported more deaths among adolescents with diabetes compared with controls of the same age as other diseases. 77% of 38 diabetics have lost one of their parents before the onset of diabetes compared with 19% in the control group.
