In order to accurately determine the equivalent circuit parameters of quartz crystal resonators, an automatic measurement system has been developed. The main part of the system is the HP4191A RF Impedance Analyzer, a programmable instrument that uses reflection coefficient bridges in the frequency range 1 to 1000 MHz. By using a qualified impedance standard, the measurement results can be traced back to national standards. The complete measurement system consists of an impedance analyzer, a programmable frequency synthesizer and a suitable controller. A special device has been made to provide standard crystal components. The hardware and software features of the system are introduced, and the measurement examples are given. In addition to measuring equivalent circuit parameters, the system allows an analog load capacitance to measure the resonant frequency and resistance. It is also possible to measure parasitic modes. This system is also suitable for the measurement of SAW resonators and body-wave resonators.
