刘海粟原名刘磐,后改名海粟,字季芳,笔名海翁,1986年3月出生于江苏省常州府青云坊.1909年7月,刘海粟去上海,进了周湘办的背景画传学他心爱的图画,接触并迷上西画艺术.半年后回到家乡常州办图画传习所,学生都是族中姐妹,他边学边教,其乐融融.1912年,17岁的刘海粟与其画友乌始光、张聿光等一起创办了上海图画美术院(后改名上海美术专科学校),这是中国现代第一所私立美术学校。刘海粟长期担任该校校长,以拓荒者的胆略从事现代美术教育。他志在“谋中华文艺的复兴”,开风气之先,首倡男女孩子校;组织旅行写生,提倡师法自然。1915年他首倡人体模特儿写生,在中国美术院校第一个使用裸体模特。1920年,又在中国美术院校第一个使用女模特儿。
