周口店田园洞是近几十年来所发现的距离周口店遗址最近的含古人类化石及丰富哺乳动物化石的洞穴堆积.目前在此出土的古人类化石有34件,哺乳动物化石有29种;在数量上,动物化石以鹿类占绝对优势,肉食动物极少.经初步研究,所发现的人类化石可归入智人;除过一件残破鬣狗牙齿外,其余动物化石全可归入现生种.从组成看,田园洞动物群与山顶洞动物群很接近,但时代可能稍晚,田园洞动物群中有63%的种曾出现在山顶洞动物群中.田园洞的堆积物特征也与山顶洞的极为一致,均为尚未胶结的角砾堆积.用鹿牙所做的铀系测年的初步结果表明,田园洞主体堆积大约形成于25ka前.对人类和动物化石的确切年代还有待今后进一步研究.周口店在经历了大半个世纪沉寂之后,首次在遗址群的核心区之外发现古人类化石,这对今后的周口店遗址研究带来了新的希望.
