As a consequence of feeling helplessness or driven by mothers’ love, some of the pregnant young girls choose to give birth to their babies. Without legal marriage, quite a lot of such girls became unwed mothers. Although they are blamed by the moral society, the group of unwed mothers, including adolescent mothers, is expanding in recent years. For example, according to a research, China has quite a few unwed mothers of different ages living in every city and sector. As mothers, they are trying to take the burden to be responsible for their babies and themselves. However, as they are facing Hukou and education problems of their children plus huge pressure both economically and mentally, most of them are or were in confusion.

So far there is no official statistics about the total number of unwed mothers in China. More unwed mothers choose to hide in the crowd and take care of their babies all alone. Compare to the unrealistic way of seeking legal and economic assistance from related institutions, the virtual cyber world can provide them with a platform to share and find comfort.
Baidu, the largest Chinese searching engine in the world, has an exclusive post bar for unwed mothers, which has established membership with 5,097 people and the posts have reached 205,505 by now. If you enter “unwed mother” in Tianya, which is another influential forum community in mainland China, you can also find more than 170 thousand relative posts. Our reporter joined four QQ chat groups of unwed mothers, which were posted on baidu post bars and Tianya community, and found that the members in just four groups were over 1500.
Yiyi, a manager of the baidu unwed mother post bar, has managed the bar for three years. The deepest feeling she feels is that the group of unwed mother is expanding. “We have minors, college students, white collars and the ‘third persons’. They are in different conditions but the number is increasing,” said Yiyi. In the virtue world, unwed mothers use QQ groups, post bars or forums to communicate, hoping to find comfort from each other. When our reporter joined the QQ group for unwed mother, she found that a simple greeting of ‘Hello’ could receive a lot of responses. ‘How old is your child?’, ‘Have your child got Hukou’, ‘Does the child’s father pay for the maintenance? ’……Such questions and posts catch the highest attention in post bars and forums. In order to evade misunderstandings and contempt in society, they choose there to share their experience, suffering, happiness and present difficulties, help new comers with their problems and cheer mothers in the same situation.
Unwed Mothers Are Booming in USA
In USA, people used to call illegitimate children bastards. But now people begin to treat this phenomenon as a common thing. According to New York Times, the ratio of illegitimate children in USA has exceeded a threshold: two in three of babies born by women under 30 years old are illegitimate children. In the past, most illegitimate children used to come from poor families or minorities according to the investigation of “Trend of Children” by an institution in Washington. But in recent 20 years, the fastest-growing group of unwed mothers is white women in their 20s.
According to the report of “Trend of Children”, in USA, 93% of women who have received college education have babies after marriage; while the proportion for women who have secondary education is 62% and women who have only gone to high school or below is 43%. As a consequence, Frank Fustenberg, a socialist of University of Pennsylvania in USA, pointed out: “Marriage has become a luxurious good thing”.
The difference between unwed mothers in China and USA is that the Chinese mothers can not get married while American mothers have more chance to marry but refuse. In USA, almost all illegitimate births happened between cohabitating couples, who may keep such relationship as long as a marriage and regard marriage as a natural thing not a purposeful behavior. Even though women are experiencing illegitimate birth, they do not think they should marry someone to avoid embarrassment.
Theresa Fragoso, a 25-year-old single mother, has never thought marriage is the solution to illegitimate birth since the minute she found she was pregnant. “Woman used to live upon men, but now we don’t need their help any longer. We can make a living all by ourselves and raise our children at the same time.”
As to such phenomenon, researchers say that even though many Americans are holding back from marriage, in fact it is a better demonstration that they want more from it and to get more emotional satisfaction, not merely being supported economically.
