The modulator bias point setting is a key problem in optical fiber AM CATV externally modulated transmitters. Some special methods should be adopted to satisfy practical CSO (Composite Second Order distortion) specifications. In this paper, a novel control loop for biasing the modulator in order to eliminate even order distortion is presented. The theoretical analysis and deduction are given for this scheme, and in agreement well with experimental results. In a real PAL/D 550 MHz CATV transmission experiment, CSO distortion for all the channels is less than -65 dBc.
