The three-piece fiber optic connector assembly developed by GTE Laboratories and GTE Connector Company in the United States, namely the flexible connector process, the diamond fiber cutters and the extended beam lens type connector, is expected to greatly reduce fiber optic transmission line production, installation and maintenance problem. Flexible joints can be used in the field less than 3 minutes to complete the joint. The maximum optical loss produced by this connector is 1 dB. Flexible joint process can automatically compensate for fiber OD tolerance. Currently available connectors and housings are only suitable for 125mm diameter optical fibers with a 0.95mm diameter buffer tube, while other diameter optical connectors and housings are available from stock this year.
