1994年,全国生产各类汽车140万辆,其中广东2.62万辆;产值1650亿元,其中广东 28.6亿元;广东占全国的份额分别为1.87%和1.7%;广东的汽车工业明显落后于全国,并有被淘汰的危险.广东汽车工业存在的问题可以概括为:散、小、乱、低、慢.造成广东汽车工业落后的原因是:认识不足,未把汽车工业真正摆上重要位置;体制不顺,统筹协调乏力;发展路子有偏颇,同外商合作策略失当;投入分散,力度不足.作者建议:下决心把汽车工业搞上去,使之成为广东经济新一轮起飞的龙头;成立省振兴汽车工业领导小组,由一名省领导亲自挂帅,集中管理,强化调控;突出重点,集中力量上规模并加强与中央沟通,力争中央的计划支持.
