姚期智,美国国家科学院院士、美国人文及科学院院士、中国科学院外籍院士。1946年12月生于上海,1967年毕业于台湾大学,之后赴美国深造。1972年获哈佛大学物理学博士学位,1975年获伊利诺大学香槟分校计算机科学博士学位。他曾先后在麻省理工学院、斯坦福大学、加州大学伯克利分校等从事教学和研究,1986年至2004年6月任普林斯顿大学计算机科学系教授。2000年,美国计算机学会把该年度的图灵奖(公认为计算机领域诺贝尔奖)授予他,使他成为自图灵奖创立以来首位获奖的华裔学者。2004年9月,姚期智正式加盟清华大学,任高等研究中心全职教授。他说,之所以要成为清华大学的全职教授,是因为他对清华有信心,也希望清华人看到他的信心。对自己的清华学生,姚期智只有一个要求:做世界一流的工作!
Yao Zhizhi, academician of the National Academy of Sciences, member of the American Academy of Humanities and Sciences, and foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Born in Shanghai in December 1946, graduated from Taiwan University in 1967 and went to the United States for further studies. He received a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University in 1972 and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1975. He has taught and researched at MIT, Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley. From 1986 to June 2004, he was a professor of computer science at Princeton University. In 2000, the American Computer Society awarded him the Turing Prize for this year (recognized as the Nobel Prize in Computer Science), making him the first award winning Chinese scholar since the creation of the Turing Award. In September 2004, Yao Chi officially joined Tsinghua University, serving as full-time professor of advanced research center. He said that the reason for becoming a full-time professor at Tsinghua University is because he has confidence in Tsinghua University and hopes Tsinghua University people can see his confidence. For his Tsinghua students, Yao Chi only one request: to do world-class work!
