由王天有、徐凯教授主持的“明清工程”正式启动。明清是我国封建社会末世的两个王朝,历时500余年。从明代中叶起至清末正是古代传统社会向近代社会转型的重要历史时期。在这一时期中,社会的政治、经济、军事、文化、思想观念、民族关系、对外交往等方面,由微至著均发生了深刻的变化,而这些变化几乎与西方国家近代化进程是同步的。明清工程将明清两朝作为一个整体,打通1840年作为近代开端的界限,直至1911年推翻帝制,治有清一代史。
