1954年,我刚从天津被选入北京青年足球队,即同年维泗、张宏根等人一起被送到世界足球强国——匈牙利去训练。当时我年仅十八岁,瘦瘦的身材,守门技术也很不成样子。记得当时我们的教练匈牙利人约瑟夫看过我守门后,一面摇头,一面毫不客气对我说:“中国是一个有六亿人口的大国,一定有很多人材,不知为什么会挑出你这样的守门员来!”这句刺耳的话,反倒激起了我苦练技术的决心。经过一番艰苦而勤奋的练习,我终于掌握了多样的守门技术,初步扭转了约瑟夫教练的看法和印象。一九五五年八月,我们北京青年队做为中国体育代表团成员,参加了在波兰首都华沙举行的第五届世周总理在球场上与张俊秀亲切握手(摄于1956年)
