学界对于藩镇的研究主要聚焦以下几点:“安史之乱”与藩镇割据、藩镇与中央朝廷的关系演变、藩镇的建制与道、州、县的关系、节度使和观察使的职能考察、藩镇武将与军事制度、藩镇内部官制、宦官监军使等等;藩镇的起源、结构、性质,藩镇内部节度使、观察使、(都知)兵马使、都虞候、押衙的权力大小以及各职能差异,藩镇与道的关系、与其所管的州县的叠加情况,藩镇权力维持运作情况、藩镇内部动乱问题等等。细细回顾唐朝历史,自贞观以来是道州县三级制并行,道的性质是监察,类似于汉武帝设立的十三个刺史监察区域;而最基本的还是州县二级,是较为稳定的行政单位。直到中宗景云年间,中央派出节度使巡行西北边地,类似的使职不断涌现,以节度使、观察使为甚,并在要塞地方置军镇,始为藩镇之肇始。藩镇的出现改变了唐王朝的政治格局,它们成为了地方上重要的势力,尤以河朔为典型,与朝廷激烈抗衡,直至宪宗时得以摆平。本文回顾新中国以来对唐代藩镇的地位、性质及其内部结构认识和理解上的几个重要突破。
