对护国战争时期的唐继尧,史学界同仁大多执肯定态度,认为唐继尧作为地方实力派,倒向反袁行列,增强了反袁护国阵营的力量;他出任中华民国军务院抚军长,对护国运动的开展起了积极影响.就一时一事而论,唐继尧确曾有功于护国起义,但全面考察,上述认识则有失偏颇.唐继尧参加护国战争的主观动机是投机革命,客观上阻挠了护国战争的顺利进行,加剧了军阀割据和混战,是应当否定的.
