山东男篮的前身是1955年组建的济南队,它在当年8月举行的全国大中城市分区篮、排球锦标赛上获天津赛区男篮第一名。1956年为乙级队。1957年取消了全国锦标赛,把全国联赛定为甲、乙、丙三级升降制后,山东队长期与甲级队和全运会决赛无缘。山东队1971年在华东区六省一市比赛中获冠军,在1975年三运会上获第十二名。山东队主将王德礼、中锋刘昌荣入选国家队参加了1974年第七届亚运会。后卫王德礼还曾作为国家队主力夺取了1975年亚洲男篮锦标赛冠军。
