随着世界经济一体化的发展趋势以及客观世界复杂程度的不断提高,现代汉语和其他语言的接触日益频繁,显示出了空前的规模,汉语以往用自己语素构词来表达外来的意义这一手段在如今往往显得捉襟见肘。字母词开始以前所未有的速度进入现代汉语。字母词是外来词的一类,是直接用外文缩略字母或与汉字组合而成的词,它不是音译而是原形借词,是汉语外来词的新形式。字母词可分为多种。对字母词的知晓度、语言态度因人而异,其应用领域以及使用密度也存在着复杂的状况。
