Dam safety is closely related to the physical state of the dam structure, and the physical state of the dam depends on the maintenance and reinforcement works. To a certain extent, the maintenance and repair works control the service life of the dam structure. The benefits of dam safety measures depend to a large extent on the investment in maintenance, monitoring and management of the project. The first part discusses the effects of aging, maintenance and defects, as well as the design requirements for concrete and earth-rockfill dams and their foundations over the useful life. The second part evaluates investment benefits related to dam safety design and safety measures such as maintenance, Monitoring and management. The results show that investment returns do not directly derive from monetary income, but are reflected in good safe operation, investment protection of original buildings and economic loss caused by dam failure, while raising public awareness and lowering the risk.
