Impact of the new regulations For the U.S. auto industry, 1978 was the first year of revolution. For the first time, all types of cars sold that year had to comply with the fuel consumption standards set by the law passed by the 1975 Congress. The average fuel consumption per 100 kilometers of cars manufactured in the United States was 16.8 liters in 1974 and dropped to 13.1 liters in 1978. For now, the 1979 model cars will have only 12.3 liters. Fuel consumption will decline year by year to achieve its target: in 1985, the average fuel consumption per 100 kilometers was 8.6 liters. In another seven years, the U.S. car, which until now has been considered a “gas tiger”, will not consume more fuel than the one currently being produced in Europe or Japan. Therefore, the term “revolution” is not excessive. The following introduces the United States and the world’s first car manufacturing
