The impact of the AI revolution on white-collar occupations is the same as the impact of machine technology on blue-collar jobs. In 1952, American writer Kurt Vonnegut published his first novel “Automatic Piano.” In the novel, Vonnegut foresaw that perhaps one day the industry would design strange and impractical gadgets to do things in an extremely complicated and circuitous way that might actually or seemed easy to do. Auto Piano describes a counter-utopia where machines have taken the place of mental and manual work and a big computer makes all the decisions. Several managers and engineers are still hired to act as their new owners. But most people live at home, spend their time doing unnecessary work, watching television and “breeding like rabbits.”
