1. High schools in the USA
Formost American teenagers life in an American high school is an important and exciting experience. Most American teenagers start their high school when they are fourteen and graduate at eighteen, when they can go to work or continue studying at university. High school is not only a place to study and learn,it is also a place where students can take part in many sports and enjoy a varied(多样的) social life.
Every American high school has its school symbol, colors and ring. The school ring has the name and the symbol of the school on it. Students don’t have to wear a uniform, but they can buy clothes and other things with the school colors.
The four years each has a name:first-year students are called freshmen;second-year students are sophomores;third-year students are juniors and fourth-year students are seniors.
When students are eighteen they can receive their high school diploma(文凭). To do this they must pass exam in all their subjects. Graduates then wear a special gown(长袍)and hat and go to the graduation ceremony(仪式、庆典). The school’s principal(校长)calls each student’s name as he or she receives his or her diploma.
2. A village post office run by kids
Foston’s village post office closed 12 years ago. This caused a lot of problems for the elderly of the village as the nearest post office was miles away. The new post office was opened on November 9,2010. But it is not an ordinary post office—it is being run by the children of the village school!
The school council(理事会)planned the new post office. The school has been shown on TV,the radio and in lots of newspapers.
Miss Glass,a teacher at the school, said,“As the villagers didn’t have a post office,Mrs Moore, the head teacher, thought it was something Foston School could do,so the school council started to organize things.”
Harry Jones,a pupil at the school, said,“The post office helps us to interact(互动)with the community and its great fun.”
The post office not only provides an important service for all those in the village but it also helps the students with their education. They are learning real-life skills, maths and English, how to speak to their customers, such as persuading people to buy cards and stamps and how to take on(承担)a real job.
