Objective: To analyze the relationship between serum MMP-8 and IL-6 levels and carotid atherosclerosis plaque stability in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Methods: Eighty patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease treated in our hospital from May 2013 to October 2014 were selected as the study group. Another 80 healthy people who received medical examination in our hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. Serum levels of MMP-8 and IL-6 in both groups were measured by double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Spearman rank correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the stability of carotid plaque and serum levels of MMP-8 and IL-6 in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Results: Serum levels of MMP-8 and IL-6 in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease were significantly higher than those in the control group, with statistical significance (P <0.01). In the study group, 28 patients had unstable plaque, 32 stable plaques and 20 plaque types. The levels of serum MMP-8 and IL-6 in patients with unstable plaque were higher than those in intermediate plaques and stable plaques. The levels of serum MMP-8 and IL-6 in patients with plaque were higher than those in stable plaques. All were statistically significant (P <0.05). Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that the stability of carotid plaques in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease was positively correlated with serum MMP-8 and IL-6 levels (r = 0.71,0.66; P <0.05). Conclusion: Serum levels of MMP-8 and IL-6 in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease are related to the stability of carotid plaques.
