Technology providers LTO plans HP, IBM and Seagate announced that the second generation of LTO Ultrium technology licenses will be released in the first quarter of 2002 for storage and tape vendors. The LTO program has identified four generations of development paths and the introduction of this second generation technology will not affect the application of LTO products based on previous generation technologies. Most importantly, the second generation Ultrium format has reverse read and write capabilities that provide users with better data protection. LTO technology is a powerful open tape architecture that enables it to develop a new generation of tape storage products that maximize data integrity while maintaining storage capacity and performance standards
