香港对中国近代报刊发展影响颇大,世界上第一家用活体铅字排印的中文报纸即诞生在香港。现将19世纪香港中文报刊择要介绍如下:《遐尔贯珍》(Chinese Serial)《遐尔贯珍》是近代中国出刊较早的中文期刊之一,是英国伦敦传道会所属英华书院印刷的月刊。该刊1853年8月1日在香港问世,每期印数3千册,在香港及广州、厦门、福州、宁波、上海等通商口岸销售。其主编初为麦都思(Walter HenryMedhufst),次为奚礼尔(C.B.Hillier),1856年改为理雅各(James Legge)。该刊编者在1855年第三卷3号上表述的办刊宗旨是:“列邦之善端,可以述之于中土,而中国之美行,亦可以达
Hong Kong has had a significant impact on the development of modern Chinese newspapers and periodicals. The first Chinese newspaper typified by living type characters was born in Hong Kong. The nineteenth century Hong Kong Chinese newspapers and periodicals are now to be introduced as follows: “Chinese Serial” Yelgha-Jane is one of the earlier Chinese journals published in modern China and one of the British College of English Communication Printed monthly. The magazine was published in Hong Kong on August 1, 1853, with 3,000 impressions each and is sold in Hong Kong and trade ports such as Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai. His chief editor was Walter Henry Medhufst, second to C.B. Hillier, and James Legge in 1856. The editorial of the journal on the third volume of 1855, No. 3, stated that "the good ends of the nations can be described in Middle-earth, and the virtues of China can also be attained
